New Navy Ship set to be commissioned in Milwaukee
The USS Beloit, named for the city in southern Wisconsin, will soon be commissioned in Milwaukee.
A new naval vessel named after the city of Beloit will soon be added to the United States Navy arsenal after a commissioning ceremony planned to be held in Milwaukee.
The USS Belot (LCS 29) is a Freedom-variant littoral combat ship. It is the first ship in the US Navy to be named after Beloit, the name paying tribute to the contribution the city has made to the US Navy, such as the Fairbanks Morse plant which was crucial in building many engines for US Navy ships. The ship is the third of its type named after a city in Wisconsin, preceded by the USS Marinette (LCS-25) and USS Milwaukee (LCS-5), the latter having recently been decommissioned by the navy. It will become the 10th active Freedom-class ship in the US Navy’s arsenal.
The commissioning ceremony is expected to be Saturday, November 23, 2024, starting at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets to the ceremony are free, but they must be reserved at www.ussbeloit.org/events. The event will also be live-streamed, with the livestream beginning at 9:45 a.m. CT at https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/35146. The live stream is free for all to watch for those unable to reserve tickets or make it to the ceremony in person.
